Extreme heat can disrupt travel long before temperatures become hot enough to physically damage airport infrastructure. As temperatures climb, the air becomes less dense, reducing aircraft performance during takeoff. That can mean aircraft need more runway distance or, in some circumstances, reduced payloads during the hottest part of the day. EUROCONTROL identifies extreme temperatures as a growing operational challenge for European aviation, with heat also contributing to longer turnaround times and additional cooling requirements for aircraft on the ground.
Those effects can quickly ripple through Europe’s tightly connected air network. During the June 25–26, 2026 European heatwave, AirHelp reported 3,410 delayed flights and another 140 cancellations in a 24-hour period. Barcelona-El Prat and Amsterdam Schiphol were among the airports highlighted, while extreme temperatures, weather warnings and air-traffic-control restrictions contributed to disruption across parts of Western Europe.
Travelers shouldn’t overlook trains and roads, either. Extreme heat can soften asphalt and cause steel railway tracks to expand or buckle. During Europe’s severe June 2026 heatwave, Reuters reported that extreme temperatures caused sections of Germany’s A2 motorway to buckle and rupture, while heat-related track buckling contributed to a freight-train derailment in Sweden that disrupted rail traffic between Stockholm and Gothenburg.
The problem isn’t limited to a single heatwave. A later Reuters examination of Europe’s heat-stressed transportation infrastructure found airports, railway operators and highway authorities increasingly experimenting with heat-resistant asphalt, track monitoring, reflective coatings and other measures designed to keep transportation systems operating as extreme temperatures become more frequent.
What starts as a problem for one flight can quickly spread through the wider transport network. Delays, rerouting, and operational slowdowns can ripple into ground transportation as well, especially when airports and crews are already under pressure from the heat.
