American Airlines is adding seven daily international routes in 2027, giving travelers new nonstop options from Charlotte, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. The expansion includes first-time American Airlines service to Porto and Vienna, a return to Reykjavik after an eight-year absence, and four transatlantic routes operated by the long-range Airbus A321XLR.
According to the official American Airlines announcement, all seven routes are scheduled to operate daily. Tickets are expected to go on sale August 31, 2026, through American’s website and mobile app.
American Airlines’ New International Routes for 2027
The newly announced routes include six connections to Europe and one to Japan. Service begins between March and May 2027, depending on the destination.

Three Destinations Join or Return to American’s Network
The three Philadelphia routes represent some of the most notable additions. Porto and Vienna will be entirely new destinations for American Airlines, while Reykjavik returns to its network for the first time since 2019.
Philadelphia to Porto
Daily service between Philadelphia and Porto begins March 28 aboard an Airbus A321XLR. American first revealed its plans for the route in February 2026, giving the airline a nonstop connection to Portugal’s second-largest city and the nearby Douro Valley.
American will serve Porto for the first time in its history. The airline has created a dedicated 2027 European routes and booking page for travelers planning trips to Porto, Reykjavik and Vienna.
Philadelphia to Vienna
The Philadelphia–Vienna route begins May 6 using an Airbus A321XLR. American says it will be the only U.S. airline flying to Vienna when the service launches.
Unlike a conventional summer-only route, the Vienna service is scheduled to continue through early January 2028. That extended season will make it possible to use the nonstop during Vienna’s Christmas market period and the year-end holidays.
Philadelphia to Reykjavik
American will return to Reykjavik on May 27 with daily Airbus A321neo service from Philadelphia. This is a returning destination rather than an added frequency: the airline last served Reykjavik in 2019.
The route also stands apart from the new Porto and Vienna services because it will use an A321neo rather than the longer-range A321XLR.
New Routes From New York JFK
American is also expanding its transatlantic schedule at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport with new daily flights to Amsterdam and Nice.
Daily JFK–Amsterdam service begins March 28. It will complement American’s year-round Philadelphia–Amsterdam service and its seasonal Dallas–Amsterdam route.
Daily JFK–Nice service begins May 6, adding another nonstop option between New York and the French Riviera. Nice also works as an arrival point for travelers continuing to Cannes, Antibes, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Monaco and other destinations along the Côte d’Azur.
Both routes will use American’s Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle aircraft designed for longer routes that might not require the capacity of a widebody jet.
Charlotte Gains a Nonstop Flight to Barcelona
American will begin daily service from Charlotte to Barcelona on May 27 using a Boeing 777-200ER. Charlotte will become American’s sixth U.S. gateway to Barcelona, further expanding the airline’s presence in Spain.
This is particularly useful for travelers connecting through Charlotte from the Southeast, who will gain another way to reach Barcelona without first traveling through New York, Philadelphia, Miami or another major transatlantic gateway.
Chicago Gains a New Tokyo Narita Route
American will add daily service between Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Narita beginning March 19. The route will operate aboard a Boeing 787-9 and is timed to begin ahead of Japan’s spring cherry blossom season.
It is important to note that the flight serves Narita International Airport rather than Tokyo Haneda. Travelers will also be able to connect beyond Tokyo through American’s partnership with Japan Airlines, including onward options across Japan and other parts of Asia.
Why the Airbus A321XLR Matters
Four of the seven new routes will be operated by American’s Airbus A321XLR. The aircraft gives the airline the range to serve long-haul destinations with fewer seats than a traditional twin-aisle aircraft, making routes to mid-size markets such as Porto, Nice and Vienna more practical.
According to Airbus’ published specifications, the A321XLR has a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles. That allows it to connect cities on opposite sides of the Atlantic while retaining the economics of a single-aisle aircraft.
American’s A321XLR is configured with 20 Flagship Suite seats, 12 Premium Economy seats and 123 Main Cabin seats. The Flagship Suites include lie-flat seats, privacy doors, additional personal storage and wireless charging, according to American’s A321XLR fleet announcement.
More New York to London Service
Although it is not counted among the seven new routes, American will also restore a fourth daily flight between New York JFK and London Heathrow beginning March 28.
The additional flight will use a Boeing 787-9 equipped with Flagship Suite seats. When American’s flights are combined with those operated by partner British Airways, the two airlines expect to offer as many as 14 daily flights between New York and London.
Two Returning European Routes Will Start Earlier
American is also extending the operating season for two existing routes. Seasonal flights from Charlotte to Paris Charles de Gaulle and from Miami to Milan Malpensa are scheduled to return on March 4, 2027, providing earlier access for spring travel.
These are not new routes, but their earlier start dates are worth noting for travelers planning spring break or early-season European trips.
When Can Travelers Book the New Routes?
American says tickets for all seven newly announced routes will be available beginning August 31, 2026, through AA.com and the American Airlines mobile app.
Travelers using AAdvantage miles should compare award pricing with cash fares rather than assuming the first available price is the best one. American uses dynamic award pricing, so mileage requirements can change as demand and cash prices move.
What This Means for 2027 Travel
The practical takeaway is greater nonstop access to Europe from American’s East Coast hubs, especially Philadelphia and JFK. Travelers based near Charlotte also gain a direct route to Barcelona, while the new Chicago–Tokyo Narita service expands American’s transpacific schedule.
The most interesting part of the announcement is American’s use of the A321XLR. Rather than limiting international growth to destinations capable of filling a large widebody aircraft, the airline can use a smaller long-range jet to test and sustain routes to cities such as Porto, Vienna and Nice.
That does not guarantee lower fares, but it does create more nonstop choices and may reduce the need to connect through another U.S. or European airport. Travelers should still compare schedules, baggage rules, seat configurations and total trip costs before booking.
